George Lipsitz

George Lipsitz is a Research Professor Emeritus of Black Studies and Sociology at UC Santa Barbara. Receiving his Ph.D. in history at the University of Wisconsin, Lipsitz studies social movements, urban culture, and inequality. His twelve single and co-authored books include Insubordinate Spaces (with Barbara Tomlinson 2019), The Possessive Investment in Whiteness (twentieth-anniversary edition 2018), The Fierce Urgency of Now (with Ajay Heble and Daniel Fischlin 2013), and How Racism Takes Place (2011) and more.  Lipsitz was awarded the American Studies Association’s Angela Y. Davis Prize for Public Scholarship in 2013 and the Bode-Pearson Prize for Career Distinction in 2016.
