Chicanx author and professor Jesús Rosales (event in Spanish)
Raised in Santa Barbara, CA, (born in Durango, México) Jesús Rosales is a Chicano novelist and professor at Arizona State University committed to recuperating andpreserving Chicanx writing in Spanish. His research also focuses on the impact that Mexican popular culture has on Chicano literature andMexico on the Chicano imaginary. He is currently collecting essays from international critics that he plans to publish in four volumes includingSpanish, European, Latin American and Mexican perspectives on Chicano literature. Rosales is the founder and editor of Puentes: Revistaméxico-chicana de literatura, cultura y arte. The journal, founded in 2003, publishes essays, poetry, narrative, interviews, testimonies and art asa way to promote Chicano literature and culture on both sides of the U.S./Mexico border. He is also the founder of the Premio Nacional deNarrativa Chicana Escrita en Español in an effort to promote Chicano literature in Spanish.
He will share his expertise on Chicanx literature written in Spanish and he will read from his short stories and his novel Marco Solís: El hombrede arena (2020), the first Chicano novel about growing up in Santa Barbara. Jesús's work offers a working-class Chicano perspective of SantaBarbra and addresses racism, gentrification, various forms of alienation, and much more. The reading and discussion will be bilingual and accessible to English speakers.
Jesús Rosales (nacido en Durango, México) creció en Santa Barbara, CA y reside en Arizona. Es un novelista y profesor universitario en la Arizona State University que se dedica a preservar e investigar la historia de la literatura chicana escrita en español. Su investigación se centra también en el impacto de la cultura popular mexicana en la literatura chicana. Actualmente, planea cuatro volúmenes sobre perspectivas internacionales de la literatura Chicana que incluirán perspectivas españolas, europeas, latinoamericanas y mexicanas. En 2003, Rosales fundó la revista Puentes: Revista méxico-chicana de literatura, cultura y arte, que publica ensayos, poesía, narrativa, entrevistas, testimonios y arte para promover la literatura y cultura chicanas a ambos lados de la frontera entre EEUU y México. También es fundador del Premio Nacional de Narrativa Chicana Escrita en Español para promover la literatura chicana en español.
Compartirá sus conocimientos sobre la literatura chicana en español y leerá fragmentos de sus cuentos y de su novela Marco Solís: El hombre de arena (2020). El trabajo creativo de Jesús ofrece una visión obrera y Chicana de Santa Barbara e incluye temas como el racismo, la gentrificación, varias formas de alienación, entre otros muchos. Su charla será bilingüe.
