Global Spains Presenter

Luis Suárez-Carreño Lueje has worked as an urban architect in Spain, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Paraguay, Palestine, the Dominican Republic and Ecuador. Detained and processed on two occasions (1970 and 1973) from Francoism, he completed 3 years in prison. He is a plaintiff in Argentina and Spain as a victim of torture.

Previously known as SOS Carabanchel and Salvemos Carabanchel, Platform for a Center for Peace and Memory is a grassroots organization fighting for the preservation of cultural memory surrounding the now-demolished Carabanchel prison, a Francoist penitentiary built through the forced labor of political prisoners and others persecuted by the regime: homosexuals, conscience objectors, and other dissidents. The prison was also the scene of multiple internal (hunger strikes, riots) and external (aid networks, mobilizations for freedom and amnesty) resistances. The only surviving building is being used as a migrant detention center under the name CIE de Aluche. The organization's goal is to convert the building into a site of conscience focused on the history of the prison and its inmates, and to connect this history with political and social spheres, thus uniting memory and education to prevent the repetition of similar tragedies.

Jesús facilitated a tour of the old Francoist political prison in Carabanchel during the Global Spains Workshop in Conviviality and Acompaniment Praxis.
