Alex Eleazar is Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Sociology at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Their research interests include international migration, identity formation, Central America, decoloniality, and visual studies. Alex’s M.A. focused on the experiences of LGBTQ+ migrants within the United States. Before coming to UCSB, Alex earned a B.A. in Sociology and minor in Women and Gender Studies at Smith College. Additionally, Alex was a Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellow and a first-generation student. Currently, Alex’s dissertation explores the migration of North American and Europeans to Guatemala, the role of remote work in changing migration, the colonial legacies in the region, and the outcomes of all these interlocking topics within the country.
Alex’s fieldwork was supported by the Global Latinidades Project. Their research has additionally been funded and recognized by the American Sociological Association, the Social Science Research Council, and the Mellon Mays Foundation.
